{"cve":"CVE-2026-9697","nvd":{"published":"2026-06-17T18:18:06.473","modified":"2026-09-10T13:20:34.513","status":"Modified","description":"Impact:\nundici's ProxyAgent silently drops the requestTls option when configured with a SOCKS5 proxy URI (socks5:// or socks://). The target HTTPS connection through the SOCKS5 tunnel falls back to Node's default trust store, ignoring user-configured ca, cert, key, rejectUnauthorized, and servername settings.\n\nApplications that pin to an internal or corporate CA via requestTls.ca will, when their proxy URI is SOCKS5, get the default Mozilla CA bundle as the trust anchor instead. Any cert signed by any publicly-trusted CA for the target hostname is accepted, breaking the intended pin and enabling MITM read and tamper of the HTTPS exchange.\n\nAffected applications are those that use undici's ProxyAgent (or Socks5ProxyAgent directly) with SOCKS5 AND rely on requestTls for TLS scope restriction. The bug was introduced in undici 7.23.0 when SOCKS5 support was added.\n\nPatches:\nUpgrade to undici v7.28.0 or v8.5.0.\n\nWorkarounds:\nNo workaround is available within the SOCKS5 path. If a SOCKS5 proxy with TLS scope restriction is required and an upgrade is not yet possible, route the traffic through an HTTP-proxy ProxyAgent instead, where requestTls is honored correctly.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N","score":7.4},"cwes":["CWE-295"],"references":["https://cna.openjsf.org/security-advisories.html","https://github.com/nodejs/undici/security/advisories/GHSA-vmh5-mc38-953g","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2026:22380","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2026:22934","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2026:34342"],"products":["nodejs:undici"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:39:28.638635428+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-9697","score":0.00459,"percentile":0.39775,"date":"2026-11-01"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-vmh5-mc38-953g","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-vmh5-mc38-953g","summary":"undici vulnerable to TLS certificate validation bypass via dropped requestTls in SOCKS5 ProxyAgent","modified":"2026-09-10T03:51:09.588756335Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"undici","purl":"pkg:npm/undici","ranges":[">=7.23.0 <7.28.0"],"fixed":["7.28.0"]},{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"undici","purl":"pkg:npm/undici","ranges":[">=8.0.0 <8.5.0"],"fixed":["8.5.0"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
