{"cve":"CVE-2026-96642","nvd":{"published":"2026-10-21T21:20:32.650","modified":"2026-10-22T16:46:48.920","status":"Undergoing Analysis","description":"Pillow is a Python imaging library. Prior to 13.0.0, the TarIO initializer in src/PIL/TarIO.py accepts a negative octal member size and computes a backward seek that returns to the same 512-byte header. When the requested member name does not match, the parser repeatedly reads that header, consumes a full CPU core, and never returns. TarIO is reached only when an application directly uses PIL.TarIO.TarIO rather than the default Image.open() path. This issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.","cvss_v4":{"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N","score":7.1},"cvss_v3":null,"cwes":["CWE-835"],"references":["https://github.com/python-pillow/Pillow/commit/19b695fdcc5eddc37374e2b1645fc4185edaf71d","https://github.com/python-pillow/Pillow/pull/10012","https://github.com/python-pillow/Pillow/releases/tag/13.0.0","https://github.com/python-pillow/Pillow/security/advisories/GHSA-3j72-p6qg-6xp7"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-23T16:39:28.036610720+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-96642","score":0.00396,"percentile":0.3355,"date":"2026-10-26"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-3j72-p6qg-6xp7","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-3j72-p6qg-6xp7","summary":"Pillow: TarIO negative size field causes infinite CPU-spin loop","modified":"2026-10-22T16:15:47.141565966Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"pillow","purl":"pkg:pypi/pillow","ranges":["<13.0.0"],"fixed":["13.0.0"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
