{"cve":"CVE-2026-96638","nvd":{"published":"2026-10-21T21:20:32.067","modified":"2026-10-22T16:46:48.920","status":"Undergoing Analysis","description":"Pillow is a Python imaging library. From 9.1.0 until 13.0.0, BmpRleDecoder.decode() in src/PIL/BmpImagePlugin.py permits crafted RLE BMP delta escapes and absolute-mode runs to append beyond the remaining dest_length without a per-branch cap. A delta can add roughly 255 image rows in one iteration, so a kilobyte-sized file with a large but permitted width can expand the data bytearray to hundreds of megabytes or more, causing memory-exhaustion denial of service. This issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","score":6.5},"cwes":["CWE-400","CWE-770"],"references":["https://github.com/python-pillow/Pillow/commit/e7794835e323ff2691d9b3a974cade1a44301b9a","https://github.com/python-pillow/Pillow/pull/10015","https://github.com/python-pillow/Pillow/releases/tag/13.0.0","https://github.com/python-pillow/Pillow/security/advisories/GHSA-24rc-8hj2-v98c"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-23T16:39:28.036610720+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-96638","score":0.0035,"percentile":0.28374,"date":"2026-10-25"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-24rc-8hj2-v98c","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-24rc-8hj2-v98c","summary":"Pillow: BMP RLE decoder memory-amplification DoS via unbounded delta escape / absolute mode","modified":"2026-10-22T16:15:46.839620074Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"pillow","purl":"pkg:pypi/pillow","ranges":[">=9.1.0 <13.0.0"],"fixed":["13.0.0"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
