{"cve":"CVE-2026-92939","nvd":{"published":"2026-09-17T14:17:58.970","modified":"2026-09-17T15:17:00.650","status":"Deferred","description":"vm2 3.11.3 through 3.11.6 exposes the host Node.js crypto module to a NodeVM sandbox when the crypto builtin is allowed. The module is presented via a recursive read-only proxy, but its callable exports still execute with host-process authority. Sandboxed JavaScript can therefore call crypto.setEngine() with a filesystem path to an attacker-supplied native library (for example, one bundled in an untrusted plugin package already written to disk); OpenSSL asks the operating-system dynamic loader to load the file, and the library's constructor executes native code in the host process before engine-symbol validation rejects it. Exploitation requires only the crypto builtin and does not require fs, process, module, child_process, worker_threads, vm, or inspector access, resulting in a sandbox escape and arbitrary native code execution. Fixed in 3.11.7.","cvss_v4":{"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:H/SI:H/SA:H","score":9.4},"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":9.9},"cwes":["CWE-114"],"references":["https://github.com/patriksimek/vm2/security/advisories/GHSA-46pr-c5wc-xffx","https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/vm2-3.11.3-through-3.11.6-native-code-execution-via-crypto-setengine","https://github.com/patriksimek/vm2/security/advisories/GHSA-46pr-c5wc-xffx"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:55:23.253742848+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-92939","score":0.00616,"percentile":0.49543,"date":"2026-11-01"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-46pr-c5wc-xffx","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-46pr-c5wc-xffx","summary":"vm2 crypto builtin loads attacker native code through setEngine","modified":"2026-10-01T15:45:05.648155026Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"vm2","purl":"pkg:npm/vm2","ranges":[">=3.11.3 <3.11.7"],"fixed":["3.11.7"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
