{"cve":"CVE-2026-73566","nvd":{"published":"2026-08-13T18:18:19.250","modified":"2026-10-24T15:10:00.190","status":"Deferred","description":"node-tar is a tar archive manipulation library for Node.js. Prior to 7.5.21, node-tar's filesFilter in src/list.ts uses the recursive mapHas helper to walk an archive entry path upward with path.dirname() and no segment cap when tar.t(...) or tar.x(...) receives a non-empty member-selection list. A crafted GNU L or PAX x long-path header with thousands of slash-separated segments reaches this.filter(entry.path, entry) in Parser[CONSUMEHEADER] in src/parse.ts before Unpack[CHECKPATH] applies maxDepth, causing an uncatchable RangeError stack overflow that terminates asynchronous and streaming Node.js consumers. This issue is fixed in version 7.5.21.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","score":7.5},"cwes":["CWE-400","CWE-674"],"references":["https://github.com/isaacs/node-tar/commit/631ae59121bf8fc8a22bbae35f074cb9b789cd4a","https://github.com/isaacs/node-tar/security/advisories/GHSA-r292-9mhp-454m","https://github.com/isaacs/node-tar/security/advisories/GHSA-r292-9mhp-454m"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-24T16:53:35.584907681+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-73566","score":0.00531,"percentile":0.4459,"date":"2026-10-25"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-r292-9mhp-454m","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-r292-9mhp-454m","summary":"node-tar: Uncontrolled recursion in mapHas/filesFilter allows uncatchable stack-overflow DoS via crafted long-path tar with member selection","modified":"2026-09-10T03:51:11.855710545Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"tar","purl":"pkg:npm/tar","ranges":["<7.5.21"],"fixed":["7.5.21"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
