Prior to version 6.0.0, the Windows fallback path in src/npmRunner.ts, used when npm_execpath does not provide the npm CLI path, can construct a shell command containing an untrusted value from the --workspace option. When an attacker can influence that option and the fallback npm execution path is reached, shell metacharacters in the workspace value can execute arbitrary operating-system commands with the privileges of the user running the CLI, allowing data access, file modification, or service disruption. This issue is fixed in version 6.0.0.","cvss_v4":{"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N","score":8.5},"cvss_v3":null,"cwes":["CWE-78"],"references":["https://github.com/CycloneDX/cyclonedx-node-npm/commit/15d3beb5bcd2b0b6eccfdf31192f5103b3f12c0f","https://github.com/CycloneDX/cyclonedx-node-npm/pull/1489","https://github.com/CycloneDX/cyclonedx-node-npm/releases/tag/v6.0.0","https://github.com/CycloneDX/cyclonedx-node-npm/security/advisories/GHSA-q69g-4hcv-6jg4"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:55:23.253742848+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-71538","score":0.00212,"percentile":0.11349,"date":"2026-10-25"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-q69g-4hcv-6jg4","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-q69g-4hcv-6jg4","summary":"@cyclonedx/cyclonedx-npm: Shell Injection via Unsanitized --workspace Argument on Windows","modified":"2026-09-17T15:00:05.899785431Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"@cyclonedx/cyclonedx-npm","purl":"pkg:npm/%40cyclonedx/cyclonedx-npm","ranges":["<6.0.0"],"fixed":["6.0.0"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
