{"cve":"CVE-2026-68768","nvd":{"published":"2026-08-22T15:16:20.903","modified":"2026-10-14T13:10:00.187","status":"Deferred","description":"hashcat contains a heap-based buffer overflow (out-of-bounds write) in the outfile_write() function in src/outfile.c. When assembling output into a fixed-size buffer (HCBUFSIZ_LARGE, ~16 MB), the function sequentially appends the username, separator, hash, and plaintext via memcpy without validating that the accumulated length stays within the buffer capacity. When run with --username --show against a crafted hash file containing an oversized username that nearly fills the buffer, the total assembled output exceeds the buffer, causing a heap buffer overflow that can corrupt memory and crash the process.","cvss_v4":{"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:L/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N","score":6.9},"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H","score":6.1},"cwes":["CWE-120"],"references":["https://github.com/hashcat/hashcat","https://github.com/hashcat/hashcat/blob/v7.1.2/src/outfile.c#L654-L668","https://github.com/hashcat/hashcat/commit/68f56a2d8712867a8520bf4dcf07f6145c23df89","https://github.com/hashcat/hashcat/issues/4740","https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/hashcat-through-heap-buffer-overflow-in-outfile-write-via-oversized-username"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:49:38.260478770+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-68768","score":0.00209,"percentile":0.10971,"date":"2026-10-25"},"kev":null,"osv":[],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
