Prior to versions 4.1.136.Final and 4.2.16.Final, the `Bzip2Decoder` handler in Netty's compression codec pipeline is vulnerable to a denial-of-service attack through a malformed bzip2 stream that permanently captures the event-loop thread in an infinite loop. The vulnerability exists in the run-length encoding (RLE) state machine within [`Bzip2BlockDecompressor.read()`]. This issue has been fixed in versions 4.1.136.Final and 4.2.16.Final.","cvss_v4":{"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N","score":8.7},"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","score":7.5},"cwes":["CWE-835"],"references":["https://github.com/netty/netty/security/advisories/GHSA-558v-64gr-wgg4"],"products":["netty:netty"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:46:40.600842820+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-59901","score":0.0046,"percentile":0.39894,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-558v-64gr-wgg4","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-558v-64gr-wgg4","summary":"Netty: [Bzip2Decoder] Infinite Loop in RLE State Machine Leads to Event-Loop Thread Hang","modified":"2026-09-10T03:50:12.358146459Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"io.netty:netty-codec-compression","purl":"pkg:maven/io.netty/netty-codec-compression","ranges":[">=4.2.0.Final <4.2.16.Final"],"fixed":["4.2.16.Final"]},{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"io.netty:netty-codec","purl":"pkg:maven/io.netty/netty-codec","ranges":["<4.1.136.Final"],"fixed":["4.1.136.Final"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
