{"cve":"CVE-2026-55086","nvd":{"published":"2026-08-19T20:17:17.520","modified":"2026-09-09T21:15:59.613","status":"Deferred","description":"Etherpad is a real-time collaborative editor. Prior to 3.1.0, src/node/handler/ImportHandler.ts and src/node/handler/ExportHandler.ts derive temporary filenames from Math.random() and place them in os.tmpdir(). On a host with a shared world-writable temporary directory, a local unprivileged attacker who predicts a filename can precreate a symbolic link to a file writable by the Etherpad process. Subsequent import or export operations can follow the link through fs.writeFile, fs.rename, or document-conversion output and overwrite the target with partially attacker-controlled content. This issue is fixed in version 3.1.0.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N","score":4.2},"cwes":["CWE-59","CWE-377"],"references":["https://github.com/ether/etherpad/commit/8c6104c5d5daf41f0d454acc04d42dffa0e0d996","https://github.com/ether/etherpad/pull/7784","https://github.com/ether/etherpad/releases/tag/v3.1.0","https://github.com/ether/etherpad/security/advisories/GHSA-2jwf-f4xq-f24h","https://github.com/ether/etherpad/security/advisories/GHSA-2jwf-f4xq-f24h"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:49:38.260478770+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-55086","score":0.00138,"percentile":0.03213,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-2jwf-f4xq-f24h","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-2jwf-f4xq-f24h","summary":"ep_etherpad-lite: Import/export uses Math.random() for temp file paths; predictable paths on shared /tmp enable symlink-based file overwrite","modified":"2026-08-13T14:25:58.243775Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"ep_etherpad-lite","purl":"pkg:npm/ep_etherpad-lite","ranges":["<3.1.0"],"fixed":["3.1.0"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
