Versions 2.9.0 through 2.19.8 are vulnerable to heap buffer overflow when the JSON generator is provided with an oversized streamed object. When streaming to an IO JSON.dump(obj, io) and JSON::State#generate(obj, io) can write past the internal JSON generator buffer when a streamed object contains an\nattacker-controlled string near 16 KB. Exploitation would result in a reliable process crash/denial of service. This issue has been fixed in version 2.19.9.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L","score":3.7},"cwes":["CWE-122","CWE-131","CWE-787"],"references":["https://github.com/ruby/json/releases/tag/v2.19.9","https://github.com/ruby/json/security/advisories/GHSA-x2f5-4prf-w687","https://github.com/ruby/json/security/advisories/GHSA-x2f5-4prf-w687"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-25T17:50:06.907763985+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-54696","score":0.00382,"percentile":0.31923,"date":"2026-10-25"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-x2f5-4prf-w687","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-x2f5-4prf-w687","summary":"Ruby json: JSON generator heap buffer overflow when streaming to an IO","modified":"2026-09-10T03:51:12.575360401Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"RubyGems","name":"json","purl":"pkg:gem/json","ranges":[">=2.9.0 <2.19.9"],"fixed":["2.19.9"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
