Prior to 2.8.0, W3CBaggagePropagator.extract() in @opentelemetry/core does not enforce size limits when parsing inbound baggage HTTP headers. The W3C Baggage specification recommends a maximum of 8,192 bytes and 180 entries; these limits were only enforced on the outbound (inject()) path, not on the inbound (extract()) path. Parsing oversized baggage causes memory allocation proportional to the header size without any cap. This vulnerability is fixed in 2.8.0.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L","score":5.3},"cwes":["CWE-770"],"references":["https://github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-js/security/advisories/GHSA-8988-4f7v-96qf"],"products":["opentelemetry:opentelemetry"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-25T23:44:33.281319194+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-54285","score":0.00402,"percentile":0.34193,"date":"2026-10-25"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-8988-4f7v-96qf","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-8988-4f7v-96qf","summary":"OpenTelemetry Core: Unbounded memory allocation in W3C Baggage propagation","modified":"2026-09-10T03:50:48.883260062Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"@opentelemetry/core","purl":"pkg:npm/%40opentelemetry/core","ranges":["<2.8.0"],"fixed":["2.8.0"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
