Prior to version 9.1.0, a remote code execution (RCE) via server-side template injection (SSTI) allows for user supplied code to be executed in the server's context where it is executed as the document-merge-server user with the UID 901 thus giving an attacker considerable control over the container. The vulnerability is limited to XLSX templates, were the xltpl library uses a npn-sandboxed Jinja environment for the processing of the template. This issue has been patched in version 9.1.0.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":7.2},"cwes":["CWE-1336"],"references":["https://github.com/adfinis/document-merge-service/releases/tag/v9.1.0","https://github.com/adfinis/document-merge-service/security/advisories/GHSA-w47q-945m-q9pc"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:57:46.668721662+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-53964","score":0.00493,"percentile":0.42023,"date":"2026-10-25"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-w47q-945m-q9pc","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-w47q-945m-q9pc","summary":"Document Merge Service vulnerable to RCE via SSTI (xlsx tempaltes)","modified":"2026-09-10T12:25:55.406064842Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"document-merge-service","purl":"pkg:pypi/document-merge-service","ranges":["<9.1.0"],"fixed":["9.1.0"]}]},{"id":"PYSEC-2026-3830","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/PYSEC-2026-3830","summary":"Document Merge Service vulnerable to RCE via SSTI (xlsx tempaltes)","modified":"2026-09-10T12:15:05.605719783Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"document-merge-service","purl":"pkg:pypi/document-merge-service","ranges":["<9.1.0"],"fixed":["9.1.0"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
