{"cve":"CVE-2026-53604","nvd":{"published":"2026-09-04T20:17:23.437","modified":"2026-09-08T21:05:26.920","status":"Deferred","description":"nebula-mesh is a self-hosted control plane for Slack Nebula mesh VPN. Prior to version 0.3.8, the web handler renderMobileBundle passes the real *pki.CAResolver directly into mobilebundle.Build. Inside Build, resolver.LoadByID decrypts the CA's ed25519 private key into a *pki.CAManager, but Build never calls CAManager.Wipe() on any return path. As a result, when a mobile-bundle request goes through the web UI and Build returns — especially on error (missing network, invalid prefix, DB error, signing failure) — the plaintext CA private key remains on the Go heap, unwiped, until garbage collection. An attacker able to read process memory (core dump, swap, memory-scraping) can recover the CA signing key, which would allow minting arbitrary host certificates for the mesh. The API handler already does this correctly: it loads the CAManager, defer caMgr.Wipe(), and wraps it in caManagerResolver. Only the web path is affected. This issue has been patched in version 0.3.8.","cvss_v4":{"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N","score":7.1},"cvss_v3":null,"cwes":["CWE-212","CWE-316"],"references":["https://github.com/forgekeep/nebula-mesh/commit/1f1ab9aa8472239763d967e3d50a3cd53a1a79b9","https://github.com/forgekeep/nebula-mesh/releases/tag/v0.3.8","https://github.com/forgekeep/nebula-mesh/security/advisories/GHSA-2p2f-px33-4vv5"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:52:03.409947763+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-53604","score":0.00184,"percentile":0.07995,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-2p2f-px33-4vv5","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-2p2f-px33-4vv5","summary":"nebula-mesh: CA private key not zeroized on web mobile-bundle error paths","modified":"2026-07-21T19:18:50.912916787Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/forgekeep/nebula-mesh","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/forgekeep/nebula-mesh","ranges":["<0.3.8"],"fixed":["0.3.8"]}]},{"id":"GO-2026-5984","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GO-2026-5984","summary":"nebula-mesh: CA private key not zeroized on web mobile-bundle error paths in github.com/forgekeep/nebula-mesh","modified":"2026-07-21T19:15:34.610520803Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/forgekeep/nebula-mesh","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/forgekeep/nebula-mesh","ranges":["<0.3.8"],"fixed":["0.3.8"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
