Prior to 0.20.0, the Unix download() implementation in penelope.py used tar.extractall(local_download_folder) on tar archives returned by remote sessions without validating member paths, allowing a malicious or compromised session to write files outside the intended download directory and potentially overwrite ~/.penelope/peneloperc. This issue is fixed in version 0.20.0.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:L","score":5.9},"cwes":["CWE-22"],"references":["https://github.com/brightio/penelope/commit/a040afb5db32c7e80b5e8a2f9b2164cf911cfa62","https://github.com/brightio/penelope/releases/tag/v0.20.0","https://github.com/brightio/penelope/security/advisories/GHSA-f42x-p2mx-hm8r","https://github.com/brightio/penelope/security/advisories/GHSA-f42x-p2mx-hm8r"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-24T16:53:27.712498749+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-50558","score":0.00367,"percentile":0.3029,"date":"2026-10-25"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-f42x-p2mx-hm8r","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-f42x-p2mx-hm8r","summary":"Penelope unsafe tar extraction allows arbitrary local file write via crafted session archive","modified":"2026-08-04T14:40:56.988227408Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"penelope-shell-handler","purl":"pkg:pypi/penelope-shell-handler","ranges":["<0.20.0"],"fixed":["0.20.0"]}]},{"id":"PYSEC-2026-3606","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/PYSEC-2026-3606","summary":"Penelope unsafe tar extraction allows arbitrary local file write via crafted session archive","modified":"2026-08-04T14:30:31.368818933Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"penelope-shell-handler","purl":"pkg:pypi/penelope-shell-handler","ranges":["<0.20.0"],"fixed":["0.20.0"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
