{"cve":"CVE-2026-5038","nvd":{"published":"2026-06-15T16:16:34.423","modified":"2026-06-17T10:58:19.450","status":"Analyzed","description":"Impact: multer versions 2.0.0-alpha.1 through 2.1.1 and 3.0.0-alpha.1 are vulnerable to a Denial of Service when using diskStorage. Aborted or malformed multipart uploads leave orphaned partial files on disk because the Readable.pipe() call does not propagate the stream destroy signal to \nthe underlying fs.WriteStream. An attacker can exhaust disk space by triggering many aborted uploads, with no application bug required.\n\nPatches: Users should upgrade to multer 2.2.0 (2.x line) or 3.0.0-alpha.2 (3.x prerelease). Both versions track in-flight write streams and clean them up on the abort path.\n\nWorkarounds: None.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","score":7.5},"cwes":["CWE-459"],"references":["https://cna.openjsf.org/security-advisories.html","https://github.com/expressjs/multer/security/advisories/GHSA-3p4h-7m6x-2hcm"],"products":["expressjs:multer"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:38:48.522727527+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-5038","score":0.00367,"percentile":0.30561,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-3p4h-7m6x-2hcm","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-3p4h-7m6x-2hcm","summary":"Multer vulnerable to Denial of Service via incomplete cleanup of aborted uploads","modified":"2026-06-17T18:26:29.614554Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"multer","purl":"pkg:npm/multer","ranges":[">=2.0.0-alpha.1 <2.2.0"],"fixed":["2.2.0"]},{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"multer","purl":"pkg:npm/multer","ranges":[">=3.0.0-alpha.1 <3.0.0-alpha.2"],"fixed":["3.0.0-alpha.2"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
