{"cve":"CVE-2026-48831","nvd":{"published":"2026-05-24T22:16:16.017","modified":"2026-07-23T17:10:00.123","status":"Deferred","description":"Wine ships a .desktop file that registers itself as a MIME handler for EXE files and several other Windows executable file types. In some configurations, handling of an EXE file causes that file to be blindly executed with the permissions of the invoker. This allows escaping Flatpak and Snap sandboxes, because MIME handlers are not intended for use by code interpreters and loaders. NOTE: some parties feel that this is not a bug to be addressed in Wine, because there is no known solution that avoids a severe loss of usability (Wine could be a binfmt-misc handler, but binfmt-misc does not exist on all platforms supported by Wine).","cvss_v4":{"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:P/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N/AU:N/V:D/U:Clear","score":7.3},"cvss_v3":null,"cwes":["CWE-669"],"references":["https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59767","https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2026/05/19/1","http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2026/05/25/1"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:36:28.938604137+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-48831","score":0.00179,"percentile":0.07432,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
