{"cve":"CVE-2026-46703","nvd":{"published":"2026-06-10T23:16:47.893","modified":"2026-07-23T09:10:00.113","status":"Deferred","description":"Boxlite is a sandbox service that allows users to create lightweight virtual machines (Boxes) and launch OCI containers within them to run untrusted code. Prior to version 0.9.0, Boxlite allows users to specify the OCI image used by containers in the sandbox. However, when processing tar entries in OCI images, Boxlite does not account for the possibility that entries may be symlinks pointing to absolute paths. An attacker can craft a malicious OCI image and distribute it on image hosting platforms such as DockerHub, tricking users into using it. Once a user loads the malicious image, the attacker can write arbitrary content to any path on the host, which can further lead to remote code execution on the host. This issue has been patched in version 0.9.0.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":9.6},"cwes":["CWE-22"],"references":["https://github.com/boxlite-ai/boxlite/releases/tag/v0.9.0","https://github.com/boxlite-ai/boxlite/security/advisories/GHSA-f396-4rp4-7v2j","https://github.com/boxlite-ai/boxlite/security/advisories/GHSA-f396-4rp4-7v2j"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:38:48.522727527+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-46703","score":0.00482,"percentile":0.41578,"date":"2026-11-01"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-f396-4rp4-7v2j","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-f396-4rp4-7v2j","summary":"Boxlite: Path Traversal Vulnerability Leads to Arbitrary File Write on the Host","modified":"2026-09-10T03:51:05.448546682Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"boxlite","purl":"pkg:pypi/boxlite","ranges":["<0.9.0"],"fixed":["0.9.0"]},{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"boxlite-cli","purl":"pkg:cargo/boxlite-cli","ranges":["<0.9.0"],"fixed":["0.9.0"]},{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"boxlite","purl":"pkg:cargo/boxlite","ranges":["<0.9.0"],"fixed":["0.9.0"]},{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"@boxlite-ai/boxlite","purl":"pkg:npm/%40boxlite-ai/boxlite","ranges":["<0.9.0"],"fixed":["0.9.0"]},{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/boxlite-ai/boxlite/sdks/go","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/boxlite-ai/boxlite/sdks/go","ranges":["<0.9.0"],"fixed":["0.9.0"]}]},{"id":"GO-2026-5344","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GO-2026-5344","summary":"Boxlite: Path Traversal Vulnerability Leads to Arbitrary File Write on the Host in github.com/boxlite-ai/boxlite/sdks/go","modified":"2026-06-29T12:26:05.440109938Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/boxlite-ai/boxlite/sdks/go","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/boxlite-ai/boxlite/sdks/go","ranges":["<0.9.0"],"fixed":["0.9.0"]}]},{"id":"PYSEC-2026-298","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/PYSEC-2026-298","summary":"Boxlite: Path Traversal Vulnerability Leads to Arbitrary File Write on the Host","modified":"2026-07-01T20:22:49.993201Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"boxlite","purl":"pkg:pypi/boxlite","ranges":["<0.9.0"],"fixed":["0.9.0"]}]},{"id":"RUSTSEC-2026-0148","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/RUSTSEC-2026-0148","summary":"OCI layer symlink escape → arbitrary host write","modified":"2026-10-12T18:00:13.556256982Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"boxlite","purl":"pkg:cargo/boxlite","ranges":[">=0.0.0-0 <0.9.0"],"fixed":["0.9.0"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
