Prior to 7.5.8 and 8.2.0, protobufjs could recurse without a depth limit while expanding nested JSON descriptors through Root.fromJSON() and Namespace.addJSON(). A crafted JSON descriptor with deeply nested namespace definitions could cause the JavaScript call stack to be exhausted during descriptor loading. This vulnerability is fixed in 7.5.8 and 8.2.0.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","score":7.5},"cwes":["CWE-674"],"references":["https://github.com/protobufjs/protobuf.js/security/advisories/GHSA-jggg-4jg4-v7c6"],"products":["protobufjs_project:protobufjs"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:35:16.954578616+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-45740","score":0.00263,"percentile":0.18171,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-jggg-4jg4-v7c6","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-jggg-4jg4-v7c6","summary":"protobufjs: Denial of Service via unbounded recursive JSON descriptor expansion","modified":"2026-09-10T03:51:06.294549383Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"protobufjs","purl":"pkg:npm/protobufjs","ranges":["<7.5.8"],"fixed":["7.5.8"]},{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"protobufjs","purl":"pkg:npm/protobufjs","ranges":[">=8.0.0 <8.2.0"],"fixed":["8.2.0"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
