Prior to 7.5.6 and 8.0.2, protobufjs could recurse without a depth limit while decoding nested protobuf data. This affected both skipping unknown group fields and generated decoding of nested message fields. A crafted protobuf binary payload could cause the JavaScript call stack to be exhausted during decoding. This vulnerability is fixed in 7.5.6 and 8.0.2.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","score":7.5},"cwes":["CWE-674","CWE-606"],"references":["https://github.com/protobufjs/protobuf.js/security/advisories/GHSA-685m-2w69-288q","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2026:42815","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2026:60520","https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-44289","https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2477130"],"products":["protobufjs_project:protobufjs"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:35:16.954578616+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-44289","score":0.0063,"percentile":0.50205,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-685m-2w69-288q","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-685m-2w69-288q","summary":"protobuf.js: Denial of service through unbounded protobuf recursion","modified":"2026-09-10T03:50:45.700576464Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"protobufjs","purl":"pkg:npm/protobufjs","ranges":["<7.5.6"],"fixed":["7.5.6"]},{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"protobufjs","purl":"pkg:npm/protobufjs","ranges":[">=8.0.0 <8.0.2"],"fixed":["8.0.2"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
