{"cve":"CVE-2026-43998","nvd":{"published":"2026-05-13T18:16:16.317","modified":"2026-10-26T17:10:03.270","status":"Modified","description":"vm2 is an open source vm/sandbox for Node.js. In 3.10.5, NodeVM's require.root path restriction can be bypassed using filesystem symlinks, allowing sandboxed code to load modules from outside the allowed root directory in host context. Because path validation uses path.resolve() (which does not dereference symlinks) but module loading uses Node's native require() (which does), an attacker can load arbitrary host-realm modules and achieve remote code execution. This vulnerability is fixed in 3.11.0.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":8.5},"cwes":["CWE-59"],"references":["https://github.com/patriksimek/vm2/security/advisories/GHSA-cp6g-6699-wx9c","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2026:50850","https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-43998","https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2477206","https://github.com/patriksimek/vm2/security/advisories/GHSA-cp6g-6699-wx9c"],"products":["vm2_project:vm2"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-26T17:39:09.812804557+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-43998","score":0.00722,"percentile":0.53701,"date":"2026-10-26"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-cp6g-6699-wx9c","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-cp6g-6699-wx9c","summary":"vm2 has a NodeVM require.root bypass via symlink traversal that allows sandbox escape","modified":"2026-05-14T20:50:50.143205Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"vm2","purl":"pkg:npm/vm2","ranges":[">=3.10.5 <3.11.0"],"fixed":["3.11.0"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
