{"cve":"CVE-2026-41579","nvd":{"published":"2026-07-01T02:17:00.193","modified":"2026-10-25T17:10:00.197","status":"Analyzed","description":"runc is a CLI tool for spawning and running containers according to the OCI specification. In versions prior to 1.3.6, 1.4.0-rc.1, 1.4.0-rc.12, 1.5.0-rc.1, and 1.5.0-rc.1, when setting up the container rootfs, setupPtmx and setupDevSymlinks call os.Remove and os.Symlink with a filepath.Join string which allow an image with /dev as a symlink to trick runc into deleting files called ptmx on the host or creating a hardcoded set of symlinks with specific names and targets in an arbitrary pre-existing host directory. This issue is not exploitable under Docker, because Docker creates a top-level read-only layer that masks any malicious /dev symlink present in the container image — unlike some other Linux container tooling, whose higher-level runtimes built on runc remain exposed to exploitation via a malicious image. This issue has been fixed in versions 1.3.6, 1.4.3 and 1.5.0.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N","score":3.3},"cwes":["CWE-61"],"references":["https://github.com/opencontainers/runc/commit/864db8042dbb","https://github.com/opencontainers/runc/security/advisories/GHSA-xjvp-4fhw-gc47"],"products":["linuxfoundation:runc"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-25T17:50:06.907763985+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-41579","score":0.00186,"percentile":0.08138,"date":"2026-10-25"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-xjvp-4fhw-gc47","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-xjvp-4fhw-gc47","summary":"runc: Malicious image with /dev symlink can trigger limited host filesystem integrity violations ","modified":"2026-09-10T03:51:09.778120218Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/opencontainers/runc","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/opencontainers/runc","ranges":["<1.3.6"],"fixed":["1.3.6"]},{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/opencontainers/runc","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/opencontainers/runc","ranges":[">=1.4.0 <1.4.3"],"fixed":["1.4.3"]},{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/opencontainers/runc","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/opencontainers/runc","ranges":[">=1.5.0-rc.1 <1.5.0-rc.3"],"fixed":["1.5.0-rc.3"]}]},{"id":"GO-2026-5761","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GO-2026-5761","summary":"Malicious image with /dev symlink can trigger limited host filesystem integrity violations in github.com/opencontainers/runc","modified":"2026-07-08T15:29:23.485432274Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/opencontainers/runc","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/opencontainers/runc","ranges":["<1.3.6",">=1.4.0 <1.4.3",">=1.5.0-rc.1 <1.5.0-rc.3"],"fixed":["1.3.6","1.4.3","1.5.0-rc.3"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
