{"cve":"CVE-2026-40937","nvd":{"published":"2026-04-22T21:17:08.877","modified":"2026-06-17T10:45:54.767","status":"Analyzed","description":"RustFS is a distributed object storage system built in Rust. Prior to 1.0.0-alpha.94, all four notification target admin API endpoints in `rustfs/src/admin/handlers/event.rs` use a `check_permissions` helper that validates authentication only (access key + session token), without performing any admin-action authorization via `validate_admin_request`. Every other admin handler in the codebase correctly calls `validate_admin_request` with a specific `AdminAction`. This is the only admin handler file that skips authorization. A non-admin user can overwrite a shared admin-defined notification target by name, causing subsequent bucket events to be delivered to an attacker-controlled endpoint. This enables cross-user event interception and audit evasion. 1.0.0-alpha.94 contains a patch.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:L","score":8.3},"cwes":["CWE-862"],"references":["https://github.com/rustfs/rustfs/releases/tag/1.0.0-alpha.94","https://github.com/rustfs/rustfs/security/advisories/GHSA-pfcq-4gjr-6gjm"],"products":["rustfs:rustfs"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:33:09.003606135+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-40937","score":0.00293,"percentile":0.21885,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-pfcq-4gjr-6gjm","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-pfcq-4gjr-6gjm","summary":"RustFS: Missing admin authorization on notification target endpoints allows unauthenticated configuration of event webhooks","modified":"2026-05-05T16:09:14.768769Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"rustfs","purl":"pkg:cargo/rustfs","ranges":["<=0.0.2"],"fixed":[]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
