Prior to 2.1.1 and 1.10.5, the patch for CVE-2026-24884 relies on a purely logical string validation within the isPathWithinParent utility. This check verifies if a resolved path string starts with the destination directory string but fails to account for the actual filesystem state. By exploiting this \"Logical vs. Physical\" divergence, an attacker can bypass the security check using a Directory Poisoning technique (pre-existing symbolic links). This vulnerability is fixed in 2.1.1 and 1.10.5.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":7.8},"cwes":["CWE-59"],"references":["https://github.com/node-modules/compressing/security/advisories/GHSA-4c3q-x735-j3r5","https://github.com/node-modules/compressing/security/advisories/GHSA-4c3q-x735-j3r5"],"products":["node-modules:compressing"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-26T21:38:48.864438205+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-40931","score":0.00258,"percentile":0.17284,"date":"2026-10-26"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-4c3q-x735-j3r5","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-4c3q-x735-j3r5","summary":"Complete Bypass of CVE-2026-24884 Patch via Git-Delivered Symlink Poisoning in compressing","modified":"2026-05-05T16:03:24.049895Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"compressing","purl":"pkg:npm/compressing","ranges":[">=2.0.0 <2.1.1"],"fixed":["2.1.1"]},{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"compressing","purl":"pkg:npm/compressing","ranges":["<1.10.5"],"fixed":["1.10.5"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
