Versions prior to 5.2.2 are vulnerable to a Path Traversal attack within the extractall functionality. When extracting a maliciously crafted ZIP or TAR archive, the library fails to sanitize or validate the filenames of the archive members. This allow files to be written outside the intended destination directory, potentially leading to arbitrary file overwrite and Remote Code Execution (RCE). Version 5.2.2 contains a fix.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":7.8},"cwes":["CWE-22"],"references":["https://github.com/wkentaro/gdown/commit/af569fc6ed300b7974dee66dc51e9f01b57b4dff","https://github.com/wkentaro/gdown/releases/tag/v5.2.2","https://github.com/wkentaro/gdown/security/advisories/GHSA-76hw-p97h-883f"],"products":["wkentaro:gdown"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-26T21:38:48.864438205+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-40491","score":0.00575,"percentile":0.47189,"date":"2026-10-26"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-76hw-p97h-883f","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-76hw-p97h-883f","summary":"gdown Affected by Arbitrary File Write via Path Traversal in gdown.extractall","modified":"2026-09-10T03:50:43.649955498Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"gdown","purl":"pkg:pypi/gdown","ranges":["<5.2.2"],"fixed":["5.2.2"]}]},{"id":"PYSEC-2026-2158","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/PYSEC-2026-2158","summary":"","modified":"2026-07-13T07:15:30.143176232Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"gdown","purl":"pkg:pypi/gdown","ranges":["<5.2.2"],"fixed":["5.2.2"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
