The implementation uses a path-string check rather than comparing device and inode numbers to identify the root directory. An attacker or accidental user can bypass this safeguard by using a symbolic link that resolves to the root directory (e.g., /tmp/rootlink -> /), potentially leading to the unintended recursive deletion of the entire root filesystem.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H","score":7.7},"cwes":["CWE-59"],"references":["https://github.com/uutils/coreutils/pull/9706","https://github.com/uutils/coreutils/releases/tag/0.7.0"],"products":["uutils:coreutils"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-26T21:38:48.864438205+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-35349","score":0.00185,"percentile":0.08013,"date":"2026-10-26"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-7cr3-h577-g38j","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-7cr3-h577-g38j","summary":"rm: --preserve-root bypassed via a symlink to / (string check instead of dev/inode)","modified":"2026-07-06T20:41:03.620763Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"uu_rm","purl":"pkg:cargo/uu_rm","ranges":["<0.7.0"],"fixed":["0.7.0"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
