The implementation only validates if the target path is literally / and does not canonicalize the path. An attacker or accidental user can use path variants such as /../ or symbolic links to execute destructive recursive operations (e.g., chmod -R 000) on the entire root filesystem, leading to system-wide permission loss and potential complete system breakdown.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":7.3},"cwes":["CWE-22"],"references":["https://github.com/uutils/coreutils/pull/10033","https://github.com/uutils/coreutils/releases/tag/0.6.0"],"products":["uutils:coreutils"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-26T21:38:48.864438205+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-35338","score":0.00175,"percentile":0.06949,"date":"2026-10-26"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-4c7q-4928-8445","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-4c7q-4928-8445","summary":"chmod: --preserve-root bypassed by any path that resolves to root (e.g. /../)","modified":"2026-07-06T17:56:19.992916Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"uu_chmod","purl":"pkg:cargo/uu_chmod","ranges":["<0.6.0"],"fixed":["0.6.0"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
