{"cve":"CVE-2026-34588","nvd":{"published":"2026-04-06T16:16:35.893","modified":"2026-10-26T22:10:00.163","status":"Modified","description":"OpenEXR provides the specification and reference implementation of the EXR file format, an image storage format for the motion picture industry. From 3.1.0 to before 3.2.7, 3.3.9, and 3.4.9, internal_exr_undo_piz() advances the working wavelet pointer with signed 32-bit arithmetic. Because nx, ny, and wcount are int, a crafted EXR file can make this product overflow and wrap. The next channel then decodes from an incorrect address. The wavelet decode path operates in place, so this yields both out-of-bounds reads and out-of-bounds writes. This vulnerability is fixed in 3.2.7, 3.3.9, and 3.4.9.","cvss_v4":{"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N","score":8.6},"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":7.8},"cwes":["CWE-125","CWE-190","CWE-787"],"references":["https://github.com/AcademySoftwareFoundation/openexr/releases/tag/v3.2.7","https://github.com/AcademySoftwareFoundation/openexr/releases/tag/v3.3.9","https://github.com/AcademySoftwareFoundation/openexr/releases/tag/v3.4.9","https://github.com/AcademySoftwareFoundation/openexr/security/advisories/GHSA-588r-cr5c-w6hf","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2026:15887"],"products":["openexr:openexr"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-26T22:26:44.656832877+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-34588","score":0.00482,"percentile":0.41303,"date":"2026-10-26"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-588r-cr5c-w6hf","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-588r-cr5c-w6hf","summary":"OpenEXR has a signed 32-bit Overflow in PIZ Decoder Leads to OOB Read/Write","modified":"2026-07-13T16:43:18.653324065Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"openexr","purl":"pkg:pypi/openexr","ranges":[">=3.1.0 <3.2.7"],"fixed":["3.2.7"]},{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"openexr","purl":"pkg:pypi/openexr","ranges":[">=3.3.0 <3.3.9"],"fixed":["3.3.9"]},{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"openexr","purl":"pkg:pypi/openexr","ranges":[">=3.4.0 <3.4.9"],"fixed":["3.4.9"]}]},{"id":"PYSEC-2026-2845","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/PYSEC-2026-2845","summary":"OpenEXR has a signed 32-bit Overflow in PIZ Decoder Leads to OOB Read/Write","modified":"2026-07-13T16:32:32.992093310Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"openexr","purl":"pkg:pypi/openexr","ranges":[">=3.1.0 <3.2.7",">=3.3.0 <3.3.9",">=3.4.0 <3.4.9"],"fixed":["3.2.7","3.3.9","3.4.9"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
