{"cve":"CVE-2026-34219","nvd":{"published":"2026-03-31T16:16:31.920","modified":"2026-07-24T20:10:00.147","status":"Analyzed","description":"libp2p-rust is the official rust language Implementation of the libp2p networking stack. Prior to version 0.49.4, the Rust libp2p Gossipsub implementation contains a remotely reachable panic in backoff expiry handling. After a peer sends a crafted PRUNE control message with an attacker-controlled, near-maximum backoff value, the value is accepted and stored as an Instant near the representable upper bound. On a later heartbeat, the implementation performs unchecked Instant + Duration arithmetic (backoff_time + slack), which can overflow and panic with: overflow when adding duration to instant. This issue is reachable from any Gossipsub peer over normal TCP + Noise + mplex/yamux connectivity and requires no further authentication beyond becoming a protocol peer. This issue has been patched in version 0.49.4.","cvss_v4":{"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N","score":8.2},"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","score":5.9},"cwes":["CWE-190","CWE-617"],"references":["https://github.com/libp2p/rust-libp2p/security/advisories/GHSA-xqmp-fxgv-xvq5"],"products":["protocol:libp2p-gossipsub"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:28:18.033120106+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-34219","score":0.00583,"percentile":0.47888,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-xqmp-fxgv-xvq5","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-xqmp-fxgv-xvq5","summary":"libp2p-gossipsub: Remote crash via unchecked Instant overflow in heartbeat backoff expiry handling","modified":"2026-04-06T23:34:56.143916Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"libp2p-gossipsub","purl":"pkg:cargo/libp2p-gossipsub","ranges":["<0.49.4"],"fixed":["0.49.4"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
