{"cve":"CVE-2026-33481","nvd":{"published":"2026-03-26T18:16:29.733","modified":"2026-06-17T10:37:34.373","status":"Analyzed","description":"Syft is a a CLI tool and Go library for generating a Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) from container images and filesystems. Syft versions before v1.42.3 would not properly cleanup temporary storage if the temporary storage was exhausted during a scan. When scanning archives Syft will unpack those archives into temporary storage then inspect the unpacked contents. Under normal operation Syft will remove the temporary data it writes after completing a scan. This vulnerability would affect users of Syft that were scanning content that could cause Syft to fill the temporary storage that would then cause Syft to raise an error and exit. When the error is triggered Syft would exit without properly removing the temporary files in use. In our testing this was most easily reproduced by scanning very large artifacts or highly compressed artifacts such as a zipbomb. Because Syft would not clean up its temporary files, the result would be filling temporary file storage preventing future runs of Syft or other system utilities that rely on temporary storage being available. The patch has been released in v1.42.3. Syft now cleans up temporary files when an error condition is encountered. There are no workarounds for this vulnerability in Syft. Users that find their temporary storage depleted can manually remove the temporary files.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L","score":5.3},"cwes":["CWE-460"],"references":["https://github.com/anchore/stereoscope/pull/537","https://github.com/anchore/syft/pull/4629","https://github.com/anchore/syft/pull/4668","https://github.com/anchore/syft/security/advisories/GHSA-rjcw-vg7j-m9rc"],"products":["anchore:syft"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:28:18.033120106+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-33481","score":0.00423,"percentile":0.36685,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-rjcw-vg7j-m9rc","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-rjcw-vg7j-m9rc","summary":"Syft improper temporary file cleanup","modified":"2026-09-10T03:50:40.814854523Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/anchore/syft","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/anchore/syft","ranges":["<1.42.3"],"fixed":["1.42.3"]}]},{"id":"GO-2026-4809","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GO-2026-4809","summary":"Syft improper temporary file cleanup in github.com/anchore/syft","modified":"2026-03-24T18:29:16.969957Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/anchore/syft","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/anchore/syft","ranges":["<1.42.3"],"fixed":["1.42.3"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
