Prior to version 7.5.11, tar (npm) can be tricked into creating a symlink that points outside the extraction directory by using a drive-relative symlink target such as C:../../../target.txt, which enables file overwrite outside cwd during normal tar.x() extraction. This vulnerability is fixed in 7.5.11.","cvss_v4":{"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:H/VA:N/SC:N/SI:H/SA:N","score":8.2},"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N","score":5.5},"cwes":["CWE-22"],"references":["https://github.com/isaacs/node-tar/commit/f48b5fa3b7985ddab96dc0f2125a4ffc9911b6ad","https://github.com/isaacs/node-tar/security/advisories/GHSA-9ppj-qmqm-q256","https://github.com/isaacs/node-tar/security/advisories/GHSA-9ppj-qmqm-q256"],"products":["isaacs:tar"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:25:53.701907451+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-31802","score":0.00269,"percentile":0.19054,"date":"2026-11-01"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-9ppj-qmqm-q256","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-9ppj-qmqm-q256","summary":"node-tar Symlink Path Traversal via Drive-Relative Linkpath","modified":"2026-09-10T03:50:38.398085665Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"tar","purl":"pkg:npm/tar","ranges":["<7.5.11"],"fixed":["7.5.11"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
