{"cve":"CVE-2026-28338","nvd":{"published":"2026-02-27T21:16:19.017","modified":"2026-06-17T10:28:27.310","status":"Analyzed","description":"PMD is an extensible multilanguage static code analyzer. Prior to version 7.22.0, PMD's `vbhtml` and `yahtml` report formats insert rule violation messages into HTML output without escaping. When PMD analyzes untrusted source code containing crafted string literals, the generated HTML report contains executable JavaScript that runs when opened in a browser. Practical impact is limited because `vbhtml` and `yahtml` are legacy formats rarely used in practice. The default `html` format is properly escaped and not affected. Version 7.22.0 contains a fix for the issue.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N","score":6.1},"cwes":["CWE-79"],"references":["https://github.com/pmd/pmd/commit/c140c0e1de5853a08efb84c9f91dfeb015882442","https://github.com/pmd/pmd/pull/6475","https://github.com/pmd/pmd/security/advisories/GHSA-8rr6-2qw5-pc7r"],"products":["pmd_project:pmd"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:24:17.937441719+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-28338","score":0.00343,"percentile":0.27869,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-8rr6-2qw5-pc7r","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-8rr6-2qw5-pc7r","summary":"PMD Designer has Stored XSS in VBHTMLRenderer and YAHTMLRenderer via unescaped violation messages","modified":"2026-02-28T06:56:20.134050Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"net.sourceforge.pmd:pmd-core","purl":"pkg:maven/net.sourceforge.pmd/pmd-core","ranges":["<7.22.0"],"fixed":["7.22.0"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
