In version 0.11.3 to before 0.40.3, an attacker who can influence the tar stream from a QEMU guest VM could write files outside the intended workspace directory on the host. The retrieveWorkspace function extracts tar entries without validating that paths stay within the workspace, allowing path traversal via ../ sequences. This issue has been patched in version 0.40.3.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:H/A:H","score":8.4},"cwes":["CWE-22"],"references":["https://github.com/chainguard-dev/melange/commit/6e243d0d46699f837d7c392397a694d2bcc7612b","https://github.com/chainguard-dev/melange/security/advisories/GHSA-qxx2-7h4c-83f4"],"products":["chainguard:melange"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:22:27.261130201+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-24843","score":0.00186,"percentile":0.08227,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-qxx2-7h4c-83f4","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-qxx2-7h4c-83f4","summary":"melange QEMU runner could write files outside workspace directory","modified":"2026-09-10T03:50:59.695845628Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"chainguard.dev/melange","purl":"pkg:golang/chainguard.dev/melange","ranges":[">=0.11.3 <0.40.3"],"fixed":["0.40.3"]}]},{"id":"GO-2026-4407","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GO-2026-4407","summary":"melange QEMU runner could write files outside workspace directory in chainguard.dev/melange","modified":"2026-02-05T16:28:56.824919Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"chainguard.dev/melange","purl":"pkg:golang/chainguard.dev/melange","ranges":[">=0.11.3 <0.40.3"],"fixed":["0.40.3"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
