This mismatch allows an attacker to craft a malicious TAR archive that bypasses path traversal protections and creates hardlinks to arbitrary files outside the extraction directory. Version 7.5.7 contains a fix for the issue.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:L/A:N","score":8.2},"cwes":["CWE-22","CWE-59"],"references":["https://github.com/isaacs/node-tar/commit/f4a7aa9bc3d717c987fdf1480ff7a64e87ffdb46","https://github.com/isaacs/node-tar/security/advisories/GHSA-34x7-hfp2-rc4v","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2026:18480","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2026:18868","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2026:2900"],"products":["isaacs:tar"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:21:16.563232421+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-24842","score":0.00608,"percentile":0.49105,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-34x7-hfp2-rc4v","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-34x7-hfp2-rc4v","summary":"node-tar Vulnerable to Arbitrary File Creation/Overwrite via Hardlink Path Traversal","modified":"2026-09-10T03:50:32.616577975Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"tar","purl":"pkg:npm/tar","ranges":["<7.5.7"],"fixed":["7.5.7"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
