{"cve":"CVE-2026-23954","nvd":{"published":"2026-01-22T22:16:20.833","modified":"2026-06-17T10:22:20.753","status":"Analyzed","description":"Incus is a system container and virtual machine manager. Versions 6.21.0 and below allow a user with the ability to launch a container with a custom image (e.g a member of the ‘incus’ group) to use directory traversal or symbolic links in the templating functionality to achieve host arbitrary file read, and host arbitrary file write. This ultimately results in arbitrary command execution on the host. When using an image with a metadata.yaml containing templates, both the source and target paths are not checked for symbolic links or directory traversal. This can also be exploited in IncusOS. A fix is planned for versions 6.0.6 and 6.21.0, but they have not been released at the time of publication.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:A/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N","score":8.7},"cwes":["CWE-22"],"references":["https://github.com/lxc/incus/blob/HEAD/internal/server/instance/drivers/driver_lxc.go#L7215","https://github.com/lxc/incus/blob/HEAD/internal/server/instance/drivers/driver_lxc.go#L7294","https://github.com/lxc/incus/security/advisories/GHSA-7f67-crqm-jgh7","https://github.com/user-attachments/files/24473599/template_arbitrary_write.sh","https://github.com/user-attachments/files/24473601/templates_arbitrary_write.patch"],"products":["linuxcontainers:incus"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:21:16.563232421+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-23954","score":0.00781,"percentile":0.55974,"date":"2026-11-01"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-7f67-crqm-jgh7","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-7f67-crqm-jgh7","summary":"Incus container image templating arbitrary host file read and write","modified":"2026-03-27T22:33:19.324436Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/lxc/incus/v6/cmd/incusd","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/lxc/incus/v6/cmd/incusd","ranges":["all versions"],"fixed":[]}]},{"id":"GO-2026-4357","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GO-2026-4357","summary":"Incus container image templating arbitrary host file read and write in github.com/lxc/incus","modified":"2026-02-05T06:26:06.330985Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/lxc/incus","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/lxc/incus","ranges":["all versions"],"fixed":[]},{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/lxc/incus/v6","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/lxc/incus/v6","ranges":[">=6.1.0"],"fixed":[]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
