Prior to version 20.36.1, TOCTOU (Time-of-Check-Time-of-Use) vulnerabilities in virtualenv allow local attackers to perform symlink-based attacks on directory creation operations. An attacker with local access can exploit a race condition between directory existence checks and creation to redirect virtualenv's app_data and lock file operations to attacker-controlled locations. This issue has been patched in version 20.36.1.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L","score":4.5},"cwes":["CWE-59","CWE-362"],"references":["https://github.com/pypa/virtualenv/commit/dec4cec5d16edaf83a00a658f32d1e032661cebc","https://github.com/pypa/virtualenv/pull/3013","https://github.com/pypa/virtualenv/security/advisories/GHSA-597g-3phw-6986"],"products":["virtualenv:virtualenv"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:19:41.481987139+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-22702","score":0.001,"percentile":0.0086,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-597g-3phw-6986","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-597g-3phw-6986","summary":"virtualenv Has TOCTOU Vulnerabilities in Directory Creation","modified":"2026-09-10T03:50:32.732715893Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"virtualenv","purl":"pkg:pypi/virtualenv","ranges":["<20.36.1"],"fixed":["20.36.1"]}]},{"id":"PYSEC-2026-2009","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/PYSEC-2026-2009","summary":"virtualenv Has TOCTOU Vulnerabilities in Directory Creation","modified":"2026-07-07T17:57:28.238961214Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"virtualenv","purl":"pkg:pypi/virtualenv","ranges":["<20.36.1"],"fixed":["20.36.1"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
