{"cve":"CVE-2026-10050","nvd":{"published":"2026-08-04T11:22:43.883","modified":"2026-08-08T00:38:56.660","status":"Analyzed","description":"In Eclipse Jetty, the Digest authentication server-side component uses ISO-8859-1 to encode the password as bytes.\n\n\n\nThis was done because the initial specification for HTTP did not specify explicitly a charset, and it was assumed to be ISO-8859-1 for historical reasons.\n\n\n\nIf the password contains characters that cannot be represented in ISO-8859-1, they are silently replaced by `?`. This happens with passwords that contain Chinese, Cyrillic or Greek characters, for example: `αβ123` converts to `??123`.\n\n\n\nAn attacker can send a request with a digest `Authorization` header crafted with a password made of only `?` characters; the server would match any password of the same length that contains non-ISO-8859-1 characters.\n\n\n\nRecent HTTP Digest [RFC-7616](https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc7616) supports a `charset` parameters that defaults to UTF-8 that allows for correct encoding/decoding of passwords.","cvss_v4":{"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N","score":8.7},"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:H","score":9.1},"cwes":["CWE-173","CWE-303"],"references":["https://github.com/jetty/jetty.project/security/advisories/GHSA-2fvj-hgj9-j2gr","https://gitlab.eclipse.org/security/cve-assignment/-/work_items/120","https://github.com/jetty/jetty.project/security/advisories/GHSA-2fvj-hgj9-j2gr"],"products":["eclipse:jetty"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:47:10.050265369+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2026-10050","score":0.00632,"percentile":0.50317,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-2fvj-hgj9-j2gr","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-2fvj-hgj9-j2gr","summary":"Eclipse Jetty Digest Authentication: ISO-8859-1 lossy encoding allows authentication bypass via character substitution","modified":"2026-09-10T03:51:10.292148883Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"org.eclipse.jetty:jetty-security","purl":"pkg:maven/org.eclipse.jetty/jetty-security","ranges":[">=9.4.0.v20161208 <9.4.63"],"fixed":["9.4.63"]},{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"org.eclipse.jetty:jetty-security","purl":"pkg:maven/org.eclipse.jetty/jetty-security","ranges":[">=10.0.0 <10.0.31"],"fixed":["10.0.31"]},{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"org.eclipse.jetty:jetty-security","purl":"pkg:maven/org.eclipse.jetty/jetty-security","ranges":[">=11.0.0 <11.0.31"],"fixed":["11.0.31"]},{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"org.eclipse.jetty:jetty-security","purl":"pkg:maven/org.eclipse.jetty/jetty-security","ranges":[">=12.0.0 <12.0.36"],"fixed":["12.0.36"]},{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"org.eclipse.jetty.ee8:jetty-ee8-security","purl":"pkg:maven/org.eclipse.jetty.ee8/jetty-ee8-security","ranges":[">=12.0.0 <12.0.36"],"fixed":["12.0.36"]},{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"org.eclipse.jetty.ee9:jetty-ee9-security","purl":"pkg:maven/org.eclipse.jetty.ee9/jetty-ee9-security","ranges":[">=12.0.0 <12.0.36"],"fixed":["12.0.36"]},{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"org.eclipse.jetty:jetty-security","purl":"pkg:maven/org.eclipse.jetty/jetty-security","ranges":[">=12.1.0 <12.1.10"],"fixed":["12.1.10"]},{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"org.eclipse.jetty.ee8:jetty-ee8-security","purl":"pkg:maven/org.eclipse.jetty.ee8/jetty-ee8-security","ranges":[">=12.1.0 <12.1.10"],"fixed":["12.1.10"]},{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"org.eclipse.jetty.ee9:jetty-ee9-security","purl":"pkg:maven/org.eclipse.jetty.ee9/jetty-ee9-security","ranges":[">=12.1.0 <12.1.10"],"fixed":["12.1.10"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
