{"cve":"CVE-2025-71426","nvd":{"published":"2026-09-27T02:17:17.160","modified":"2026-10-14T13:10:00.187","status":"Deferred","description":"Contrast is a confidential-computing runtime for Kubernetes. In versions before 1.4.1, a recovering Coordinator does not verify the seed supplied by the recovering party. An attacker can therefore stand up a rogue Coordinator whose manifest passes validation but whose secret seed is attacker-controlled. If network traffic is redirected from the legitimate Coordinator to the attacker's Coordinator, a workload owner can be impersonated when they either set a new manifest without comparing the returned root CA certificate against the existing one (the default behavior of the contrast CLI) or verify the Coordinator without comparing the root CA certificate against a trusted reference. Under these conditions the attacker can issue certificates that chain back to the rogue Coordinator's root CA and recover arbitrary workload secrets of workloads deployed after the attack. Secrets of the legitimate Coordinator (seed, workload secrets, CA), workload integrity, and certificates chaining to the mesh CA are not affected.","cvss_v4":{"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:L/VI:H/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N","score":7.1},"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:H/A:N","score":7.1},"cwes":["CWE-285"],"references":["https://github.com/edgelesssys/contrast/security/advisories/GHSA-vqv5-385r-2hf8","https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/contrast-before-1.4.1-coordinator-impersonation-via-unauthenticated-recovery"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:56:48.555445741+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2025-71426","score":0.0014,"percentile":0.03345,"date":"2026-10-25"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-vqv5-385r-2hf8","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-vqv5-385r-2hf8","summary":"Contrast's unauthenticated recovery allows Coordinator impersonation","modified":"2026-09-27T11:55:52.460631994Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/edgelesssys/contrast","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/edgelesssys/contrast","ranges":["<1.4.1"],"fixed":["1.4.1"]}]},{"id":"GO-2025-3455","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GO-2025-3455","summary":"Contrast's unauthenticated recovery allows Coordinator impersonation in github.com/edgelesssys/contrast","modified":"2026-09-27T11:55:52.460631994Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/edgelesssys/contrast","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/edgelesssys/contrast","ranges":["<1.4.1"],"fixed":["1.4.1"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
