{"cve":"CVE-2025-62518","nvd":{"published":"2025-10-21T17:15:40.563","modified":"2026-10-08T11:10:00.250","status":"Deferred","description":"astral-tokio-tar is a tar archive reading/writing library for async Rust. Versions of astral-tokio-tar prior to 0.5.6 contain a boundary parsing vulnerability that allows attackers to smuggle additional archive entries by exploiting inconsistent PAX/ustar header handling. When processing archives with PAX-extended headers containing size overrides, the parser incorrectly advances stream position based on ustar header size (often zero) instead of the PAX-specified size, causing it to interpret file content as legitimate tar headers. This issue has been patched in version 0.5.6. There are no workarounds.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N","score":8.1},"cwes":["CWE-843"],"references":["https://edera.dev/stories/tarmageddon","https://github.com/astral-sh/tokio-tar/commit/22b3f884adb7a2adf1d3a8d03469533f5cbc8318","https://github.com/astral-sh/tokio-tar/security/advisories/GHSA-j5gw-2vrg-8fgx","https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/security/advisories/GHSA-w476-p2h3-79g9","https://github.com/edera-dev/cve-tarmageddon"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:12:35.277909958+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2025-62518","score":0.00703,"percentile":0.52998,"date":"2026-10-25"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-j5gw-2vrg-8fgx","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-j5gw-2vrg-8fgx","summary":"astral-tokio-tar Vulnerable to PAX Header Desynchronization","modified":"2026-09-10T03:50:29.925592088Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"astral-tokio-tar","purl":"pkg:cargo/astral-tokio-tar","ranges":["<0.5.6"],"fixed":["0.5.6"]},{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"tokio-tar","purl":"pkg:cargo/tokio-tar","ranges":["<=0.3.1"],"fixed":[]}]},{"id":"RUSTSEC-2025-0110","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/RUSTSEC-2025-0110","summary":"astral-tokio-tar Vulnerable to PAX Header Desynchronization","modified":"2026-10-12T18:00:11.489562704Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"astral-tokio-tar","purl":"pkg:cargo/astral-tokio-tar","ranges":[">=0.0.0-0 <0.5.6"],"fixed":["0.5.6"]}]},{"id":"RUSTSEC-2025-0111","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/RUSTSEC-2025-0111","summary":"`tokio-tar` parses PAX extended headers incorrectly, allows file smuggling","modified":"2026-02-04T02:35:07.255927Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"tokio-tar","purl":"pkg:cargo/tokio-tar","ranges":[">=0.0.0-0"],"fixed":[]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
