{"cve":"CVE-2025-48945","nvd":{"published":"2025-06-20T20:15:33.570","modified":"2026-06-17T09:30:31.813","status":"Deferred","description":"pycares is a Python module which provides an interface to c-ares. c-ares is a C library that performs DNS requests and name resolutions asynchronously. Prior to version 4.9.0, pycares is vulnerable to a use-after-free condition that occurs when a Channel object is garbage collected while DNS queries are still pending. This results in a fatal Python error and interpreter crash. The vulnerability has been fixed in pycares 4.9.0 by implementing a safe channel destruction mechanism.","cvss_v4":{"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N","score":8.2},"cvss_v3":null,"cwes":["CWE-416"],"references":["https://github.com/aio-libs/aiodns/commit/f259a6e3650555157af53ac2b39f2ff545321d55","https://github.com/aio-libs/aiodns/releases/tag/v3.5.0","https://github.com/saghul/pycares/commit/ebfd7d71eb8e74bc1057a361ea79a5906db510d4","https://github.com/saghul/pycares/releases/tag/v4.9.0","https://github.com/saghul/pycares/security/advisories/GHSA-5qpg-rh4j-qp35"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:03:23.287444849+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2025-48945","score":0.00484,"percentile":0.41746,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-5qpg-rh4j-qp35","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-5qpg-rh4j-qp35","summary":"pycares has a Use-After-Free Vulnerability","modified":"2026-09-10T03:50:24.913361759Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"pycares","purl":"pkg:pypi/pycares","ranges":["<4.9.0"],"fixed":["4.9.0"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
