{"cve":"CVE-2025-47950","nvd":{"published":"2025-06-06T18:15:35.330","modified":"2026-06-17T09:28:53.323","status":"Analyzed","description":"CoreDNS is a DNS server that chains plugins. In versions prior to 1.12.2, a Denial of Service (DoS) vulnerability exists in the CoreDNS DNS-over-QUIC (DoQ) server implementation. The server previously created a new goroutine for every incoming QUIC stream without imposing any limits on the number of concurrent streams or goroutines. A remote, unauthenticated attacker could open a large number of streams, leading to uncontrolled memory consumption and eventually causing an Out Of Memory (OOM) crash — especially in containerized or memory-constrained environments. The patch in version 1.12.2 introduces two key mitigation mechanisms: `max_streams`, which caps the number of concurrent QUIC streams per connection with a default value of `256`; and `worker_pool_size`, which Introduces a server-wide, bounded worker pool to process incoming streams with a default value of `1024`. This eliminates the 1:1 stream-to-goroutine model and ensures that CoreDNS remains resilient under high concurrency. Some workarounds are available for those who are unable to upgrade. Disable QUIC support by removing or commenting out the `quic://` block in the Corefile, use container runtime resource limits to detect and isolate excessive memory usage, and/or monitor QUIC connection patterns and alert on anomalies.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","score":7.5},"cwes":["CWE-770"],"references":["https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc9250","https://github.com/coredns/coredns/commit/efaed02c6a480ec147b1f799aab7cf815b17dfe1","https://github.com/coredns/coredns/security/advisories/GHSA-cvx7-x8pj-x2gw","https://github.com/quic-go/quic-go","https://www.usenix.org/conference/usenixsecurity23/presentation/botella"],"products":["coredns.io:coredns"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:02:23.998251710+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2025-47950","score":0.01187,"percentile":0.67904,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-cvx7-x8pj-x2gw","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-cvx7-x8pj-x2gw","summary":"CoreDNS Vulnerable to DoQ Memory Exhaustion via Stream Amplification","modified":"2026-09-10T03:50:25.142827387Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/coredns/coredns","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/coredns/coredns","ranges":["<1.12.2"],"fixed":["1.12.2"]}]},{"id":"GO-2025-3743","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GO-2025-3743","summary":"CoreDNS Vulnerable to DoQ Memory Exhaustion via Stream Amplification in github.com/coredns/coredns","modified":"2026-02-04T04:20:59.286257Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/coredns/coredns","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/coredns/coredns","ranges":["<1.12.2"],"fixed":["1.12.2"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
