{"cve":"CVE-2025-26623","nvd":{"published":"2025-02-18T20:15:33.153","modified":"2026-06-17T09:02:09.030","status":"Analyzed","description":"Exiv2 is a C++ library and a command-line utility to read, write, delete and modify Exif, IPTC, XMP and ICC image metadata. A heap buffer overflow was found in Exiv2 versions v0.28.0 to v0.28.4. Versions prior to v0.28.0, such as v0.27.7, are **not** affected. Exiv2 is a command-line utility and C++ library for reading, writing, deleting, and modifying the metadata of image files. The heap overflow is triggered when Exiv2 is used to write metadata into a crafted image file. An attacker could potentially exploit the vulnerability to gain code execution, if they can trick the victim into running Exiv2 on a crafted image file. Note that this bug is only triggered when writing the metadata, which is a less frequently used Exiv2 operation than reading the metadata. For example, to trigger the bug in the Exiv2 command-line application, you need to add an extra command-line argument such as `fixiso`. The bug is fixed in version v0.28.5. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.","cvss_v4":{"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:L/VI:L/VA:L/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N","score":5.3},"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":9.8},"cwes":["CWE-416"],"references":["https://github.com/Exiv2/exiv2/issues/3168","https://github.com/Exiv2/exiv2/security/advisories/GHSA-38h4-fx85-qcx7"],"products":["exiv2:exiv2"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:59:18.731010617+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2025-26623","score":0.00916,"percentile":0.6018,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-38h4-fx85-qcx7","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-38h4-fx85-qcx7","summary":"Exiv2 allows Use After Free","modified":"2026-07-07T17:56:48.553588710Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"exiv2","purl":"pkg:pypi/exiv2","ranges":[">=0.28.0 <0.28.5"],"fixed":["0.28.5"]}]},{"id":"PYSEC-2026-1353","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/PYSEC-2026-1353","summary":"Exiv2 allows Use After Free","modified":"2026-07-07T17:47:35.882542261Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"exiv2","purl":"pkg:pypi/exiv2","ranges":[">=0.28.0 <0.28.5"],"fixed":["0.28.5"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
