The vulnerability is caused by an insufficient check on the length of a decompressed domain name within a DNS packet.\r\n\r\nAn attacker can craft a malicious DNS packet containing a highly compressed domain name. When the resolv library parses such a packet, the name decompression process consumes a large amount of CPU resources, as the library does not limit the resulting length of the name.\r\n\r\nThis resource consumption can cause the application thread to become unresponsive, resulting in a Denial of Service condition.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","score":7.5},"cwes":["CWE-400"],"references":["https://www.ruby-lang.org/en/news/2025/07/08/dos-resolv-cve-2025-24294/","https://www.ruby-lang.org/en/news/2025/07/08/dos-resolv-cve-2025-24294/"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:04:28.436527499+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2025-24294","score":0.00656,"percentile":0.51399,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-xh69-987w-hrp8","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-xh69-987w-hrp8","summary":"resolv vulnerable to DoS via insufficient DNS domain name length validation","modified":"2026-09-10T03:50:26.410248972Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"RubyGems","name":"resolv","purl":"pkg:gem/resolv","ranges":["<0.2.3"],"fixed":["0.2.3"]},{"ecosystem":"RubyGems","name":"resolv","purl":"pkg:gem/resolv","ranges":[">=0.4.0 <0.6.2"],"fixed":["0.6.2"]},{"ecosystem":"RubyGems","name":"resolv","purl":"pkg:gem/resolv","ranges":[">=0.3.0 <0.3.1"],"fixed":["0.3.1"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
