{"cve":"CVE-2024-51756","nvd":{"published":"2024-11-05T22:15:21.817","modified":"2026-06-17T08:06:16.437","status":"Deferred","description":"The cap-std project is organized around the eponymous `cap-std` crate, and develops libraries to make it easy to write capability-based code. cap-std's filesystem sandbox implementation on Windows blocks access to special device filenames such as \"COM1\", \"COM2\", \"LPT0\", \"LPT1\", and so on, however it did not block access to the special device filenames which use superscript digits, such as \"COM¹\", \"COM²\", \"LPT⁰\", \"LPT¹\", and so on. Untrusted filesystem paths could bypass the sandbox and access devices through those special device filenames with superscript digits, and through them provide access peripheral devices connected to the computer, or network resources mapped to those devices. This can include modems, printers, network printers, and any other device connected to a serial or parallel port, including emulated USB serial ports. The bug is fixed in #371, which is published in cap-primitives 3.4.1, cap-std 3.4.1, and cap-async-std 3.4.1. There are no known workarounds for this issue. Affected Windows users are recommended to upgrade.","cvss_v4":{"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:L/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N","score":2.3},"cvss_v3":null,"cwes":["CWE-22"],"references":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO/IEC_8859-1","https://github.com/bytecodealliance/cap-std/commit/dcc3818039761331fbeacbb3a40c542b65b5ebf7","https://github.com/bytecodealliance/cap-std/pull/371","https://github.com/bytecodealliance/cap-std/security/advisories/GHSA-hxf5-99xg-86hw","https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/fileio/naming-a-file#naming-conventions"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:57:07.693694550+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2024-51756","score":0.00583,"percentile":0.47903,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-hxf5-99xg-86hw","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-hxf5-99xg-86hw","summary":"cap-std doesn't fully sandbox all the Windows device filenames","modified":"2026-09-10T03:50:20.711365123Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"cap-std","purl":"pkg:cargo/cap-std","ranges":["<3.4.1"],"fixed":["3.4.1"]},{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"cap-async-std","purl":"pkg:cargo/cap-async-std","ranges":["<3.4.1"],"fixed":["3.4.1"]},{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"cap-primitives","purl":"pkg:cargo/cap-primitives","ranges":["<3.4.1"],"fixed":["3.4.1"]}]},{"id":"RUSTSEC-2024-0445","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/RUSTSEC-2024-0445","summary":"cap-primitives doesn't fully sandbox all the Windows device filenames","modified":"2026-10-12T18:00:13.004711734Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"cap-primitives","purl":"pkg:cargo/cap-primitives","ranges":[">=0.0.0-0 <3.4.1"],"fixed":["3.4.1"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
