Prior to version 0.9.4, where the config file is stored in an unprivileged user directory but the daemon is executed by root, it’s possible for the unprivileged user to change the config file and escalate permissions when root later runs the daemon. Version 0.9.4 contains a fix for the issue.","cvss_v4":{"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:H/VA:L/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N","score":5.8},"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":7.8},"cwes":["CWE-863"],"references":["https://github.com/thinkst/opencanary/commit/2c11575b1a3dd8b0df26a879ba856c0aa350c049","https://github.com/thinkst/opencanary/releases/tag/v0.9.4","https://github.com/thinkst/opencanary/security/advisories/GHSA-pf5v-pqfv-x8jj"],"products":["thinkst:opencanary"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:55:31.737901711+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2024-48911","score":0.00223,"percentile":0.12903,"date":"2026-11-01"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-pf5v-pqfv-x8jj","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-pf5v-pqfv-x8jj","summary":"OpenCanary Executes Commands From Potentially Writable Config File","modified":"2025-05-16T22:39:09.404195Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"opencanary","purl":"pkg:pypi/opencanary","ranges":["<0.9.5"],"fixed":["0.9.5"]}]},{"id":"PYSEC-2024-248","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/PYSEC-2024-248","summary":"","modified":"2025-05-16T14:56:49.762799Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"opencanary","purl":"pkg:pypi/opencanary","ranges":["<0.9.4"],"fixed":["0.9.4"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
