{"cve":"CVE-2024-3056","nvd":{"published":"2024-08-02T21:16:30.950","modified":"2026-10-29T07:16:42.900","status":"Modified","description":"A flaw was found in Podman. This issue may allow an attacker to create a specially crafted container that, when configured to share the same IPC with at least one other container, can create a large number of IPC resources in /dev/shm. The malicious container will continue to exhaust resources until it is out-of-memory (OOM) killed. While the malicious container's cgroup will be removed, the IPC resources it created are not. Those resources are tied to the IPC namespace that will not be removed until all containers using it are stopped, and one non-malicious container is holding the namespace open. The malicious container is restarted, either automatically or by attacker control, repeating the process and increasing the amount of memory consumed. With a container configured to restart always, such as `podman run --restart=always`, this can result in a memory-based denial of service of the system.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:H","score":7.7},"cwes":["CWE-400"],"references":["https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2024-3056","https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2270717","https://security.netapp.com/advisory/ntap-20241227-0002/"],"products":["fedoraproject:fedora","podman_project:podman","redhat:enterprise_linux","redhat:openshift_container_platform"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-29T07:45:51.975325464+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2024-3056","score":0.00545,"percentile":0.45626,"date":"2026-10-28"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-rpcc-p8xm-rc6p","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-rpcc-p8xm-rc6p","summary":"Podman vulnerable to memory-based denial of service","modified":"2026-09-10T03:50:55.413553908Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/containers/podman/v5","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containers/podman/v5","ranges":["<=5.2.0"],"fixed":[]},{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/containers/podman","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containers/podman","ranges":["<=5.2.0"],"fixed":[]},{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/containers/podman/v2","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containers/podman/v2","ranges":["<=5.2.0"],"fixed":[]},{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/containers/podman/v3","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containers/podman/v3","ranges":["<=5.2.0"],"fixed":[]},{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/containers/podman/v4","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containers/podman/v4","ranges":["<=5.2.0"],"fixed":[]}]},{"id":"GO-2024-3042","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GO-2024-3042","summary":"Podman vulnerable to memory-based denial of service in github.com/containers/podman","modified":"2026-02-04T03:19:49.243617Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/containers/podman","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containers/podman","ranges":["all versions"],"fixed":[]},{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/containers/podman/v2","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containers/podman/v2","ranges":["all versions"],"fixed":[]},{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/containers/podman/v3","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containers/podman/v3","ranges":["all versions"],"fixed":[]},{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/containers/podman/v4","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containers/podman/v4","ranges":["all versions"],"fixed":[]},{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/containers/podman/v5","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containers/podman/v5","ranges":["all versions"],"fixed":[]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
