{"cve":"CVE-2024-28863","nvd":{"published":"2024-03-21T23:15:10.910","modified":"2026-06-17T07:21:54.643","status":"Analyzed","description":"node-tar is a Tar for Node.js. node-tar prior to version 6.2.1 has no limit on the number of sub-folders created in the folder creation process. An attacker who generates a large number of sub-folders can consume memory on the system running node-tar and even crash the Node.js client within few seconds of running it using a path with too many sub-folders inside. Version 6.2.1 fixes this issue by preventing extraction in excessively deep sub-folders.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","score":6.5},"cwes":["CWE-400","CWE-770"],"references":["https://github.com/isaacs/node-tar/commit/fe8cd57da5686f8695415414bda49206a545f7f7","https://github.com/isaacs/node-tar/security/advisories/GHSA-f5x3-32g6-xq36","https://security.netapp.com/advisory/ntap-20240524-0005/","https://github.com/isaacs/node-tar/commit/fe8cd57da5686f8695415414bda49206a545f7f7","https://github.com/isaacs/node-tar/security/advisories/GHSA-f5x3-32g6-xq36"],"products":["isaacs:tar"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:47:51.568503435+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2024-28863","score":0.00929,"percentile":0.6059,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-f5x3-32g6-xq36","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-f5x3-32g6-xq36","summary":"Denial of service while parsing a tar file due to lack of folders count validation","modified":"2026-09-10T03:50:10.480254172Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"node-tar","purl":"pkg:npm/node-tar","ranges":["<6.2.1"],"fixed":["6.2.1"]},{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"tar","purl":"pkg:npm/tar","ranges":["<6.2.1"],"fixed":["6.2.1"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
