{"cve":"CVE-2024-25629","nvd":{"published":"2024-02-23T15:15:09.237","modified":"2026-06-17T07:16:19.490","status":"Analyzed","description":"c-ares is a C library for asynchronous DNS requests. `ares__read_line()` is used to parse local configuration files such as `/etc/resolv.conf`, `/etc/nsswitch.conf`, the `HOSTALIASES` file, and if using a c-ares version prior to 1.27.0, the `/etc/hosts` file. If any of these configuration files has an embedded `NULL` character as the first character in a new line, it can lead to attempting to read memory prior to the start of the given buffer which may result in a crash. This issue is fixed in c-ares 1.27.0. No known workarounds exist.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","score":5.5},"cwes":["CWE-125","CWE-127"],"references":["https://github.com/c-ares/c-ares/commit/a804c04ddc8245fc8adf0e92368709639125e183","https://github.com/c-ares/c-ares/security/advisories/GHSA-mg26-v6qh-x48q","https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/package-announce@lists.fedoraproject.org/message/2P76QYINQNPEHUTEEDOUYIRZ2X6UVZ5K/","https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/package-announce@lists.fedoraproject.org/message/CSCMTSPDIE2UHU34TIXQQHZ6JTE3Y3VF/","https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/package-announce@lists.fedoraproject.org/message/GX37LFPFQ3T6FFMMFYQTEGIQXXN7F27U/"],"products":["c-ares:c-ares","fedoraproject:fedora"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:45:59.823092188+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2024-25629","score":0.00352,"percentile":0.28827,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
