{"cve":"CVE-2023-53536","nvd":{"published":"2025-10-04T16:15:48.580","modified":"2026-08-04T10:19:11.040","status":"Modified","description":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nblk-crypto: make blk_crypto_evict_key() more robust\n\nIf blk_crypto_evict_key() sees that the key is still in-use (due to a\nbug) or that ->keyslot_evict failed, it currently just returns while\nleaving the key linked into the keyslot management structures.\n\nHowever, blk_crypto_evict_key() is only called in contexts such as inode\neviction where failure is not an option. So actually the caller\nproceeds with freeing the blk_crypto_key regardless of the return value\nof blk_crypto_evict_key().\n\nThese two assumptions don't match, and the result is that there can be a\nuse-after-free in blk_crypto_reprogram_all_keys() after one of these\nerrors occurs. (Note, these errors *shouldn't* happen; we're just\ntalking about what happens if they do anyway.)\n\nFix this by making blk_crypto_evict_key() unlink the key from the\nkeyslot management structures even on failure.\n\nAlso improve some comments.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":7.8},"cwes":["CWE-416"],"references":["https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/5bb4005fb667c6e2188fa87950f8d5faf2994410","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/5c62852942667c613de0458fc797c5b8c36112b5","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/5c7cb94452901a93e90c2230632e2c12a681bc92","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/64ef787bb1588475163069c2e62fdd8f6c27b1f6","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/701a8220762ff90615dc91d3543f789391b63298"],"products":["linux:linux_kernel"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T22:11:26.888974865+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2023-53536","score":0.00164,"percentile":0.05558,"date":"2026-11-01"},"kev":null,"osv":[],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
