{"cve":"CVE-2023-48706","nvd":{"published":"2023-11-22T22:15:08.673","modified":"2026-09-17T17:59:18.660","status":"Analyzed","description":"Vim is a UNIX editor that, prior to version 9.0.2121, has a heap-use-after-free vulnerability. When executing a `:s` command for the very first time and using a sub-replace-special atom inside the substitution part, it is possible that the recursive `:s` call causes free-ing of memory which may later then be accessed by the initial `:s` command. The user must intentionally execute the payload and the whole process is a bit tricky to do since it seems to work only reliably for the very first :s command. It may also cause a crash of Vim. Version 9.0.2121 contains a fix for this issue.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","score":4.7},"cwes":["CWE-416"],"references":["http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2023/11/22/3","https://github.com/gandalf4a/crash_report/blob/main/vim/vim_huaf","https://github.com/vim/vim/commit/26c11c56888d01e298cd8044caf860f3c26f57bb","https://github.com/vim/vim/pull/13552","https://github.com/vim/vim/security/advisories/GHSA-c8qm-x72m-q53q"],"products":["fedoraproject:fedora","neovim:neovim","netapp:hci_compute_node","vim:vim"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:42:07.670898610+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2023-48706","score":0.00544,"percentile":0.45647,"date":"2026-11-01"},"kev":null,"osv":[],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
