{"cve":"CVE-2023-44398","nvd":{"published":"2023-11-06T18:15:08.380","modified":"2026-06-17T06:27:34.033","status":"Modified","description":"Exiv2 is a C++ library and a command-line utility to read, write, delete and modify Exif, IPTC, XMP and ICC image metadata. An out-of-bounds write was found in Exiv2 version v0.28.0. The vulnerable function, `BmffImage::brotliUncompress`, is new in v0.28.0, so earlier versions of Exiv2 are _not_ affected. The out-of-bounds write is triggered when Exiv2 is used to read the metadata of a crafted image file. An attacker could potentially exploit the vulnerability to gain code execution, if they can trick the victim into running Exiv2 on a crafted image file. This bug is fixed in version v0.28.1. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":8.8},"cwes":["CWE-787"],"references":["https://github.com/Exiv2/exiv2/commit/e884a0955359107f4031c74a07406df7e99929a5","https://github.com/Exiv2/exiv2/security/advisories/GHSA-hrw9-ggg3-3r4r","https://security.gentoo.org/glsa/202312-06","https://github.com/Exiv2/exiv2/commit/e884a0955359107f4031c74a07406df7e99929a5","https://github.com/Exiv2/exiv2/security/advisories/GHSA-hrw9-ggg3-3r4r"],"products":["exiv2:exiv2"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:40:11.519948003+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2023-44398","score":0.00965,"percentile":0.61712,"date":"2026-11-01"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"PYSEC-2023-233","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/PYSEC-2023-233","summary":"","modified":"2025-10-09T08:26:40.736495Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"exiv2","purl":"pkg:pypi/exiv2","ranges":["all versions"],"fixed":[]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
